CoastPredict’s FLAME (Future Coastal Ocean Climates) project partners have published a paper ‘Future climate projections in the global coastal ocean’. Led by Jason Holt and Anna Katavouta from National Oceanographic Centre, UK, this paper represents an important step towards advancing coordinated global efforts on coastal climate modelling.

Published in Progress in Oceanography, the paper explores the challenges, solutions, and benefits of a globally coordinated approach to modeling climate impacts on the coastal ocean. It proposes the establishment of a Global Coastal Ocean Climate Model Intercomparison Project (GCO-MIP), an initiative discussed during the FLAME workshop held during CoastPredict’s annual events in Lecce, Italy in February 2025. The paper contributes to laying the foundation for GCO-MIP, which aims to harmonise coastal modelling frameworks, enable intercomparison, and improve user-relevant climate projections for coastal regions worldwide.
